Feeding Q+A

How Much Baby Formula Is Enough?

“I’ve read that he should be eating four ounces every three hours,” said a mom about her 4-month old, “but he really seems hungry and wants more!  What should I do?” I replied, “Feed him until he’s satisfied.”

How much baby formula does your little one need? The amount of formula or breast milk a baby drinks varies greatly and can change from day to day as he grows. If your baby finishes the bottle with each feed, try giving him an additional ounce to see if he wants more. The minimum your baby needs to drink is the amount that keeps him hydrated. As long as he makes wet diapers four to six times a day, he’s drinking enough.

Steady weight gain is the best indicator that your baby’s eating enough. His pediatrician will use growth charts during his routine visits to assess if he’s eating enough to grow in a healthy way.
