Lots of moms wonder: Should my pregnancy diet include sugar? Does being pregnant mean you can’t enjoy a chocolate milkshake, a piece of birthday cake, or sugar in a cup of tea?
Sugar isn’t the enemy, but it also doesn’t provide essential vitamins and minerals that you and your baby absolutely need for a healthy pregnancy.
So instead of banning sugar and other sweeteners from your diet, focus on limiting foods that contain empty calories. Sweetened beverages, candy and desserts are packed with calories, but they contain little or no healthy vitamins and minerals. Avoid excess weight gain by enjoying a variety of nutrient-packed foods in your pregnancy diet, and choose fruit for a naturally sweet snack.
